Liesbeth Brouwer

Liesbeth Brouwer (1953 – 2006) was an active and inspirational lecturer who contributed significantly and creatively to the development of the Euroculture programme – not only at the University of Groningen, but also within the Euroculture network.

Since the beginning of the Euroculture programme in 1999, she has been one of the main lecturers of the programme in Groningen, where she supervised quite some thesis students and taught the module Multicultural Europe: Language and Culture in a Changing Europe which was about the question whether Europe's linguistic diversity stands in the way of further European integration.

In 2005 the title of this module changed into: The Cultural Construction of . Language, Art and Thought.

Liesbeth was a remarkably enthusiastic teacher and really cared for her (international) students. Every year she would invite the Euroculture students to her house in the Frisian countryside.

Liesbeth Brouwer was a semiotician and literary theorist. Liesbeth was especially interested in the politics of language and cultural identity. In her research she concentrated on issues of identity production and reproduction. Her book Archeologie van een houding. Nederlandse identiteit in de Friesche Volksalmanak (1836-1899) (E.J. Brouwer 1998) reconstructs the meaning of Friesland and Frisianness in 19th century Frisian culture.

Apart from her work for Euroculture, Liesbeth Brouwer was also employed at the department of Dutch, Frisian and Lower Saxon languages and literatures – where she taught Frisian literary history and criticism. Furthermore she worked for the department of Arts, Media and Culture.
