Application deadlines

Euroculture has approximately 100 study places across our seven European partner universities available every year. Make sure that you:

Application window 2027-2029

The 2027-2029 application window will open on 19 October 2026. It will remain open until 1 September 2027.

Key deadlines 2027-2029

  • Do you wish to apply for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship? Submit your application before 11 January 2027.

  • Do you wish to apply as a self-funding candidate without Erasmus Mundus support?

    • Apply before 1 May 2027 if you are a non-EU/EEA citizen.

    • Apply before 1 June 2027 if you are an EU/EEA citizen.

Key conditions for applicants 2027-2029

  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship applicants must have graduated from their Bachelor’s degree by 11 January 2027. Candidates finishing their BA after this date may only apply as self-funded candidates without Erasmus Mundus support.

  • Self-funded candidates without Erasmus Mundus support may apply to the programme before having graduated from their BA degree, as long as they will complete it before the starting date of the academic year.

  • As a general principle, EU/EEA passport holders should apply at least two months in advance of the semester start to ensure sufficient time to register.

  • Non-EU/EEA passport holders should apply at least five months in advance of the semester start to ensure sufficient time to register and arrange for a study visa. Your chosen university will assist you in this process. 

Requirements for Admission to Euroculture

The Board of Admissions of the Euroculture programme reviews applications on a continuous basis during the application window. All applicants, regardless of whether they apply to the Erasmus Mundus scholarship or not, use one and the same application procedure. The Board of Admissions of the Euroculture programme maintains a number of key criteria for determining whether an applicant may be accepted to the Euroculture Master. These can be understood as follows:

  • Primary Admissions Criteria - The minimum, non-negotiable requirements that must be met by all applicants.

  • Secondary Admissions Criteria - The experiences, skills, and activities that strengthen and improve the quality of your application.

Primary Admissions Criteria 

  1. A relevant, recognized Bachelor’s degree - You must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. The degree must be awarded by a recognized higher education institution.

  2. Suitable academic performance and standing - you must meet the quality standards to allow entry to a European Master degree, assessed through the length of studies, quality of academic writing, and grades.

  3. Established academic writing skills - you must have demonstrated (individual) ability to construct an argument, engage critically with sources, and write in an academic register.

  4. Proven competency in the English language - You must have a sufficient level of proficiency in spoken and written English at a level appropriate for a Master-level programme, with specific test score requirements outlined in the Language Test Requirements section

Secondary Admissions Criteria 

  1. International experience - Your application is strengthened by work or study experience abroad, such as an Erasmus semester, summer schools, or full degree programmes taken in a country other than your own. Other work experiences in an intercultural context are also considered valid.

  2. Mobility experiences - Your application is strengthened by student mobility experiences, such as semesters abroad or other kinds of exchange programmes, as it shows your preparedness to be mobile and discover different cultures.

  3. Relevant work experience - Your application is strengthened by work experience in fields related to Euroculture, such as jobs and/or internships in governmental, inter-governmental, and/or nongovernmental organisations and institutions.

  4. Additional language skills - Your application is strengthened by having language skills for languages other than English, indicated using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  5. Personal competences - Your application is strengthened by displaying general abilities and qualities relevant for successful participation in Euroculture, including the ability to work and learn in an interdisciplinary and intercultural environment or to handle a demanding workload.

  6. Extracurricular activities - Your application is strengthened by other extra-curricular activities indicating that you are an active and engaged student outside your degree programme.

Academic background and degree quality

You must hold a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field to Euroculture, such as International Relations, European Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, Philosophy, Communication and Media Studies, International/European Law, or Theology.

Your Bachelor degree must be issued by a recognized, accredited higher education institution. Your degree must be equivalent in duration, level, and quality to a European Bachelor’s degree. If you are unsure if your degree meets these criteria, please contact euroculture@rug.nl for clarification.

Euroculture accepts applicants from a wide variety of academic backgrounds and national contexts. As a result, we do not formulate a strict GPA requirement for Euroculture. However, the Board of Admissions weighs academic performance during the application process, and applicants with outstanding academic results may expect this to reflect positively on their application score.

Academic writing sample

You must provide an academic writing sample in your application. The writing sample must be one individually-authored academic piece (not group work) that engages with sources and includes references in any consistent style, long enough to demonstrate a sustained argument (an excerpt of a longer work, such as a thesis chapter, is acceptable). This text should demonstrate your individual ability to conduct research and write academically. This does not need to be on a topic directly related to Euroculture.

As a general guide, a minimum of 8–10 pages is sufficient, though we appreciate that conventions vary across disciplines and educational systems. Longer texts, such as a Bachelor thesis can also be uploaded.  If your writing sample is not in English, you do not need to translate it. However, you will need to provide: 

  • a short abstract of approximately 200 words in English

  • an additional 1,000-word English summary covering the topic, argument, and key findings.

If your previous studies have not included individual written research assignments, please contact us before submitting your application so we can advise you on the most suitable alternative.

Language Test Requirements

You must (provided you are not exempted, see below) provide proof of English proficiency by submitting test results from any of the following below test providers.

  • TIELTS Academic - Overall 6.5. No section below 6.5.

  • TOEFL iBT - Overall 93. Internet-based test. TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is also accepted.

  • Cambridge CAE/CPE - CAE (C1 Advanced) or CPE (C2 Proficiency). Test results may be no older than 5 years. Only CAE and CPE are accepted.

  • Pearson PTE Academic - Minimum overall score of 71 with no less than 61 for writing. Test result may be no older than two years.

  • LanguageCert Academic - Minimum overall score of 75. Test result may be no older than two years. This test is not recognized at Uppsala Universitet.

Exemptions from the Language Test

You do not have to submit a language test result under the following circumstances:

  • You completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree that was fully taught in the English language.

  • You continuously studied for one full year (60 ECTS or equivalent) at a Bachelor-level programme (or above) at a university where English is the primary official language of the country.

You will be asked to upload proof that you are exempt in the Online Application Tool. If your proof is not sufficient, your application will not be considered. If Uppsala is your first university of choice and if your your university degree is from Bangladesh or Pakistan, the degree-awarding university must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools for the language test exemption to be valid.
